Longsword
The longsword was used in a slightly earlier period than the broad sword was. This was used throughout most of Europe (England, France, Spain, Italy, Germany). Other names for the sword are great sword and hand and a half sword. This sword is quite versatile because it can either be used with one hand or both. That way you are easily maneuverable, but can also deliver powerful blows to an enemy. All parts of the sword were designed for a specific offensive purpose, even the hilt and the pommel. The longsword is a long enough weapon that it can also be used by cavalry atop horseback. It allows for the rider to hold the reins of a horse in one hand while the longsword in the other. In general, a versatile and deadly weapon.
