Xiphos
The Xiphos was used by the Greek hoplites as well. Usually unless they had lost their spear and had already thrown their two javelins, they wouldn't resort to using it. It was pretty much their second or third choice of weaponry. One reason why these hoplites were so dominant was because they literally carried with them 5 weapons. Their spear, two javelins, their Xiphos sword, and their shield (which they often use as a weapon towards their enemies or to break their enemies' weapons. The Xiphos is generally a shorter sword, but not quite short enough to be considered a short sword. It's length is typically 50 to 60 centimeters.
